To overcome this and to sign to the system that Ampere should be kept running in the background the following can be done:

Android Settings

Apps & notifications

Advanced

Special app access

Battery optimization

click the "Not optimized" title

select "All apps"

click Ampere in the list

select "Don't optimize"

Turbo charge, Dash charge etc.

There are a lot of fast charging technologies used by Android device manufacturer, but all of them have a common point - none of them are compatible with Google's pure Android. Therefore it is not easy to detect them. In fact, every manufacturer and even every device reports the state of the fast charging others.

The research and hunt for such fast charging status interfaces can even only be started if a real device is at hand or if a dedicated user has such good technical Android knowledge that he can support the developer with proper information and even with testing.

Dash charge by OnePlus (3/3T)

Luckily I got my hands on an OnePlus 3T, so I was able to do some experiments and later I was able to include the Dash charge detection into Ampere.

The picture at the top shows 3 different charge types (from left to the right):

Charging with an USB port of a PC

Charging with an USB-C wall charger

Charging with the manufactures own Dash charger

The OnePlus 3T plays nicely and reports everything correctly and accurate. It can be seen how big the differences between the charging currents are.

The only flaw I found is the value of the maximum USB current during the Dash charging. According to the specs it should be 4000 mA in case of Dash charge, but the system reports 1800 mA. It is not a big problem though.

This changes are now included in the latest Ampere Beta which can be found here: Ampere Beta Testing Community on G++

Multi-window mode

Android 7.0 (Nougat) adds support for displaying more than one app at the same time. One handheld device can run two apps side-by-side or one-above-the-other in split-screen mode.

This means that several apps can share the screen at once. For example, a user could split the screen, viewing a web page on the left side while composing an email on the right side.

With this release Ampere can be used on Android 7.0 (Nougat) in multi-window mode. A special ability of Ampere is, that it measures continuously further while the other app is used.

This time Ampere got more stable with a few bug fixes. Also 3 new translations are in this release available.

Languages

For new users (after a fresh install) ampere chooses the system language automatically (or chooses the English language if no translation is available).

But when Ampere is already installed, this has to be made manually:

Choose your style

Material design is a fine thing, but it doesn't mean that every app should look the same. There are more than one approaches if it comes to design. To give the choice in the hand of the users Ampere now offers 5 different display styles. Every user can individually decide which style is his favorite and can set it with the star (in the right bottom corner) to stick with the selected design.

Notification enhancements

Ampere has now a redesigned notification information selector. It is now possible to select the information a user want to see in the notification in a more advanced way. The selectable information has been enhanced with the battery voltage and the battery temperature.

One million app installs reached

I am very proud to announce that Ampere have achieved to get over one million downloads on Google Play Store.

Ampere in numbers:

324 days (11.8 Months) to get the 1 million downloads

34 600 ratings with an average of 4.4 on Google Play Store

localized in 39 languages

more than 1100 members on the Ampere Beta Tester community (G+)

more than 200 followers on Twitter

The 1 million installs wouldn't be possible without the nice users, the great translators and the many-many enthusiastic people (on G+ and XDA Developers) who helped to test and to improve the app.

If you have an USB-C device and you want to know, if your USB-C cable is an USB-C spec compliant cable, you can do it with Ampere. Here is the description how to do it.

Note

On Nexus devices is the measurement interface in Marshmallow (Android 6) unfortunately not working (always 0 mA). This is a firmware bug. Please use the "Old measurement method" which is still fully functional also in Android 6.
A new feature in the latest Ampere (v1.56) is the possibility to show the maximum possible USB current with the charger/cable/device combination (if this information is available in the device and if this option is switched on in the settings).

There is currently an USB-C cable discussion, whether the USB-C cables from various manufacturer are USB-C spec compliant (uses a 3A identifier resistor instead of the "Default USB Power" one) or not. Please read the posts from Benson Leung.

There are also some posts about how to detect if a cable is USB-C spec compliant or not. For example this post.

How to test your USB-C cable

You can check your USB-C cable with latest Ampere (v1.56) in this way:

1.) Prerequisite: Your android device has an USB-C slot
2.) Your device shouldn't be charged fully to start
3.) Start Ampere (v1.56), and enable the "Max. possible USB current" option in the Basic settings
4.) Connect your phone to your computer with the USB-C cable to be tested
5.) Read the "Max. USB curr." (Maximum USB current) value

According to the latest USB-C discussions, this value should be never 3000mA if you are connected to a PC. If it is less than 3000mA then you are good to go.

Warning: Please always read your manufacturers advices and the manual of your device. Always use the cables and chargers, your manufacturer suggest.
Half million app installs reached

I am very proud to announce that Ampere have achieved to get over half million downloads at the Android Market.

Ampere needed 7 months to reach this. The app is localized in 39 languages and has more than 500 members on the Ampere Beta tester community.

The 500 000 installs wouldn't be possible without the translators and the many-many people (on G+ and XDA Developers) who helped to test and to improve the app.

Thank you for helping!

The users were also very active. The app got more than 16 800 ratings and 4 300 reviews from the users. The average rating is 4.4. I want also to thank to everyone used Ampere and made possible this happening.

1. What is Ampere?

Ampere is an application for Android (4.0.3 and up) that measures the batteries charging and discharging current.
Ampere on Google Play: http://goo.gl/ybA6Qx

2. What is electric current?

An electric current is the flow of electric charge. In electric circuits this charge is carried by moving electrons in a wire.

3. Why is it good to measure the current?

The measured battery current values can be used for several purposes:

To find out the general health of the device's battery.

To find which charger works best with your device. (charging current)

To find which USB charging cable works best with your device. (charging current)

To watch your device’s power consumption and find power hungry apps. (discharging current)

4. What is A (ampere) and mA (milliampere)?

Ampere (symbol: A) is the unit of electrical current. The Ampere is named after the French physicist Andre-Marie Ampere (1775-1836).
One Ampere is defined as the current that flows with an electric charge of one Coulomb (C) per second (s).
1 A = 1 C/s
The unit mA (milliampere) is one thousandth (10-3) of an Ampere.

5. My phone is not supported. What can I do?

Please read the first and the second posts in this XDA developer forum thread. Please post your problem with screen shots in the XDA thread.

6. My phone always measures 0. What can I do?

You can try to select the other measurement interface in the following way:
On Lollipop (or later devices) first select the “Old measurement method”:
⇒ Settings ⇒ Basic settings ⇒ Old measurement method
Try to select the correct measurement interface:
⇒ Settings ⇒ Basic settings ⇒ Measurement interface
The “Measurement interface” option will be only shown if 2 or more pre-Lollipop (old) interfaces have been found on the device.

7. My phone only measures 10-40mA maximum. What can I do?

Different devices and ROMs use widely different interfaces for current measurement. Some of them use mA (milliampere) and some of them uses other units. To combat this problem, Ampere uses a multiplier value assigned to every measurement interface which is used to correct the measured value.
If you are having this problem, please try to select an other measurement interface with the correct multiplier.
⇒ Settings ⇒ Basic settings ⇒ Measurement interface
The “Measurement interface” option will be only shown if 2 or more pre-Lollipop (old) interfaces have been found on the device.

8. Ampere shows always “measuring” on my device. What can I do?

This is caused by some erroneous conditions. Please try the following:

Restart the app.

If that doesn't help, unplug and plug in the cord.

If that doesn't help, delete and reinstall the app.

If that doesn't help, reboot your phone.

If it still doesn't help, try to select the "Old measurement method" and/or other Measurement Interface.

9. Why does this annoying “measuring” last almost 10 seconds?

Ampere measures the current 3 times a second and only gives you a measured value when 30 values have been collected. Ampere then filters the 10 highest and the 10 lowest values out and builds the average of the remaining 10 values which it displays as the shown value.
Ampere’s internal buffer can hold a maximum of 50 values.

10. Why does the measurement start again after the phone has been switched off?

If you turn off your phone or leave the app (start or switch to other app), then Ampere goes to sleep and the measurement also stops.
If you turn on your phone or start Ampere again then the measurement starts from the beginning and you need to wait the 10 seconds until enough measured values are collected to show you a stable value.
Unfortunately you can't force the measurement while your phone is sleeping. But you can force Ampere to do measurement in the background while your phone is not sleeping by simply using:

the widget

or the notification.

11. What does charging and discharging current mean?

The app measures the charging and discharging current of the battery.
If your phone is not connected to a charger, you will see the discharging current which is negative.
⇒ Ampere shows the discharging current
If you connect a charger, then the current that the charger supplies will be used to power your phone and the remaining power will be used to charge the battery.
⇒ Ampere only shows the second value, the current used to charge the battery
EXAMPLE: You use a 500mA charger. You measured earlier that your phone consumes 300mA without a charger connected (discharging current). This means your battery can be charged at a maximum current of 200mA and Ampere will only show you this 200mA charging current.

12. Why does Ampere show “Not charging” instead of “Discharging” on my device when the cord is unplugged?

A typical firmware problem is when a device reports a "Not Charging" state instead of the "Discharging" state. Please switch on the "Enhanced Measurement" setting in this case to force Ampere to try and measure the discharging current in the "Not Charging" state.
⇒ Settings ⇒ Basic settings ⇒ Enhanced Measurement
If it doesn't work then please look at whether your device has more than one measurement interface (Basic Settings / Measurement interface) and try to select another interface
⇒ Settings ⇒ Basic settings ⇒ Measurement interface
The “Measurement interface” option will be only shown if 2 or more pre-Lollipop (old) interfaces have been found on the device

13. Why is the measured current unstable?

The displayed current can be shaky or unstable or even just zero. This means that the Android system is providing unstable values.
Some phones, like the Nexus 4, report such unstable widespread readings when charging with a low current charger (e.g. 500mA), that even the average value is a joke.

14. How accurate is Ampere?

Please don't use the readings from this app as concrete science. The app is not meant to be mA accurate, but it is good enough as a relative measure of how various chargers and USB cables fair on the same device.

15. Which factors does the the discharging current depend on?

The current depends on many things (not a complete list):

Charger (USB/AC/Wireless)

USB cable

Phone type

Current tasks running

Display brightness

WiFi state

GPS state

16. How can the notification icon in the notification bar be switched off?

The notification icon can be hidden by setting the notification priority to "minimum".
⇒ Settings ⇒ Notification settings ⇒ Notification priority

17. Why does Ampere show weird values on my Samsung device?

Unfortunately, some Samsung devices don't give correct (measured) values. Just the maximum possible charging current with the actual USB cable/charger configuration. This is a firmware problem and Ampere can't correct this.

18. Does Ampere have home screen widgets?

Yes, Ampere includes 1x1 home screen widgets in dark and light variants.

19. What is the blinking dot in the upper right corner of the widget?

The dot is blinking to show you that the widget and the measuring background service are working properly.

If the blinking stops, then something has happened and the displayed values are not the actual values any more, but values from the past. Please restart the app in such a case.

20. Can an Ampere widget be used with DashClock?

Not yet.

21. Can an Ampere widget be used with the lock screen?

Yes, but with limitations:

The widget will be stretched

Only in Android 4.2 to 4.4

22. Why the alert don't appear on my Android Wear watch?

Android Wear is designed to work with Android phones running Android 4.3 or higher.

Install the Android Wear app on your device and make sure that you have given the Android Wear app access to notifications.

In 4.4: Settings > Security > Notification Access
In 5.0 and later: Settings > Sound & Notifications > Notification Access

Within the Notification access screen, make sure that Android Wear is checked.

23.) Why is the quick/fast/rapid charging not measured correctly?

Most of the android devices are only using the quick/fast/rapid etc. charging if the display is switched off (to prevent overheating), but Ampere only measures the charging current if the display of the device is switched on.

Nicer change history

Various minor bug fixes

The
new "Hide if not charging" option

To hide the notification icon when the device is not charging was an often requested feature. With the new "Hide if not charging" option it is possible in Ampere v1.46 and later versions.

If this new option is switched on and the device goes in a state others than "Charging", then Ampere changes the priority of
the notification to minimum priority. In this way, the
notification icon is not visible any more on the notification
bar if not charging, but the notification is still there if you open the notification area.
One typical problem is when a device reports "Not Charging" state instead of the "Discharging" state. This is very unfortunate, because Ampere was designed to measure the current only in the "Charging" and "Discharging" states. Even the famous Nexus 7 2013 was plagued with this problem too and therefore it was time to do something.

The solution is the new setting option "Enhanced Measurement". If it is switched on then Ampere tries to measure the discharging current also in the problematic "Not Charging" state.

In this way Ampere is able to measure the discharging current also in the "Not Charging" state.

If it doesn't work then please look whether your device has more than one measurement interface (Basic Settings / Measurement interface) and try to select an other interface.

The new option "Enhanced measurement" is first available in Ampere v1.44.

After the App is started, you will realize, that the App shows 0mA, which is because the Lollipop interface is broken for most HTC devices. If you wait a few seconds, the app will ask you whether you would like to use the old measurement interface. You can say yes, or you can just select the same option in the settings menu.

After the "Old measurement method" is selected, please open the "Measurement interface" selector and select the third interface (like in the picture on the right).

That's it. Now Ampere should show the charging current.

A last issue still exist. Because the firmware reports "not charging" instead of "discharging" in case that the charger is not connected the discharging current will be not shown. While it is sad, it is not tragic. This is unfortunately a firmware problem. Maybe it will be corrected in the next firmware upgrade.

Enjoy! :-)
Ampere was until now also capable to monitor the current flowing in and out of the battery, but for this you needed to open the notification area. The latest version of Ampere goes a bit further and it shows you the current direct as little notification icon. In this way you can enjoy your Android apps, and the current is always presented on the top of the display.

Here is how to use:

1.) To use this feature, you need to have the PRO version. If you don't have, then you can buy it by pushing the key icon.

2.) Open the settings menu and enable the notification.

3.) That's all. After a few seconds the measured current is visible in the notification bar.

4.) If you wish, you can also change the notification priority. In this way you can decide the position of Ampere's notification or make it invisible in the notification bar.

How it works

In the following picture you can see how it really works:

Upper part: The device was just switched on, but no app was started. It can be seen, that the discharging current is 200 mA.

Middle part: Google Maps was started and London was tipped in in the search area. The device switched on the GPS and downloaded the corresponding part of the map. This caused a high load and the discharging current increased, it was 720 mA.

Bottom part: The device was connected to a charger. The current is now positive because in this case the battery was charged. The charging current was 840 mA.
